Hardy Palms

Phoenix Canariensis
Extremely popular palm for the UK. Very Mediteranean. Can be used in the home conservatory, or planted out in the sun.
Will tolerate frosts down to -8c and will reach a good size quite quickly growing to 12ft.

Trachycorpus Fortuneii (Chusan Palm)
Very popular and very hardy, the Chusan has large fan shaped leaves and a hairy trunk which give it a tropical touch.
These hardy palms tolerate temperatures as low as -15 degrees centigrade but they do need shelter from strong winds. From China, these palms achieve heights of 6 to 7 meters.
We stock young Chusans (that are about 10-15cm at the trunk) through to the more mature, taller specimens.

Chamaerops Humilis (Med Fan Palm)
Excellent palms for gardens or patios, fan palms are wind and snow resistant, frost hardy and can tolerate temperatures as low as -12 degrees centigrade.
With stiff fan-shaped leaves Med Fan Palms produce suckers around the main trunk. A lovely bushy palm that we recommend highly. These achieve heights of 2-3 meters

Botia Capitata (Jelly Palm)
The Jelly Palm is one of the hardiest feather palms originating in South America and withstands temperatures as low as -10 degrees centigrade.
They have beautiful recurved blue-green leaves, tolerate high levels of rainfall and in our view are outstanding plants.
Eventually, after a number of years they reach about 4-6 meters in height.

Bamboos
|
Sasa Palmata
If you have space this plant can create a spectacular jungly effect. Very tropical looking with huge leaves, needs to be planted en masse and left to spread.
Produces a canopy which out-competes anything else. Needs room or confinement. 2-4m tall. Invasive.

Pseudosasa Japonica
One of the most widespread bamboos in the country, makes an excellent screen or container plant.
The leaves are 5-13 inches long - much longer than other hardy bamboos of the same size.
One of the best for a seaside site. Spreading. Height to 18ft.

Semiurandinaria Fastuosa
From Japan, excellent for more exposed sites as it has a very column-like structure.
Deep green canes and leaves, clump forming. 9-12ft.

Phylostachys Vivax Huanvenzhu
A Total Eden favourite (look at image on Homepage) an inversion of aureocaulis. Green culms and yellow stripes, stunning and so so quick to producer enormous culms. 8-10m (23c).

Phylostachys Vivax Aureocaulis
From China - a stunningly beautiful bamboo with large yellow culms and green stripes.
The leaves are large and deep green, clump forming, height 8-10m (-23c)

Phylostachys Nigra
The famous Black Caned Bamboo from China, Phylostachys Nigra reaches 4-6 meters in height.
They can withstand very cold weather (to -18 degrees centigrade) and can be used as a beautiful potted plant or as a screen.

Phylostachys Aurea
Phylostachys Aurea, or the Golden Bamboo, has soft canes that are yellow in the sun and an olive green in the shade.
Withstanding temperatures to -18 degrees centigrade they are as hardy as most other exotic plants although they do need shelter from strong winds. They make excellent screens, hedges or solitary specimens.

Fargesia Murielae
From the Himalayas, these specimens withstand a bitter -25 degrees centigrade! They are best planted in a shady area as a clump or as a potted plant.

Ferns
|
Dicksonia Antarctica
This is one of the best known and hardyest tree ferns from Australia and are an essential part of any sub-tropical planting scheme.
If they are planted in dappled shade and provided with planty of water then they will thrive. All sizes are available from 1-footers to 12-foot of trunk.

Trees
|
Crassifolius
Similar to the Pseudopanax Ferox, the Crassifolius has stiff leathery leaves with orange stripe about 1cm wide and up to 80cm long. As the tree gets older it begins to develop a bushy top, leaves get wider and shorter losing their teeth.

Pseudopanax Ferox (Toothed Lancewood)
Native to New Zealand a bizzarely shaped small tree, juvenile leaves are dark grey brown, narrow stiff and up to 40cm long pointing downwards and having fierce teeth.
Slow growing also suits a small garden well for architectural interest.

Torbay Dazzler
Very attractive cream leaves with yellow variation. Excellent in containers.
May need some frost protection. Height to 1.8m

Cordyline Australis
Needs no intro but we will anyway. Extremely popular palmlike tree from New Zealand.
Excellent for coastal areas, tolorant of wind, salt and frost. Strap leaves producing a spherical head forming a slim trunk.
Height to 15ft.

Olea Europea (Olive)
Much loved for their Meditereanean appearance Olives are capable of bearing fruit during long and hot summers.
A warm spot in the garden with well drained soil will favour this hardy and very attractive tree.
These are available as small standards through to ancient gnarled specimens.

Shrubs
|
Phormium Tenax
New Zealand Flax. Grows to a height of 2 meters and is an excellent coastal plant.

Fatsia Japonica
Evergreen shrub from East Asia that has large leathery palmate leaves and nice jungly, glossy green leaves.

Bananas
|
Ensete Maurelli
Beautiful huge leaves turning red in the sun. Can be left out all summer but would need to be lifted before frosts and overwintered.

Musella Lasiocarpa
Dwarf Chinese banana growing to about 5ft producing a yellow lotus flower and fruit.
Root hardy!

|
Musa Basjoo
The famous Japanese hardy banana will grow happily in the garden where it can achieve 15ft or more. Needs lots of feed and water and will grow very fast. It could even fruit!
Wrap stem to protect from frost or plant will be cut to the ground and you will have to start again.

Other Exotics

Cycas Revoluta
The most popular cycad from Japan / Korea. Easy to care for and makes excellent house plant.
Larger varieties can be planted outside and can withstand frosts.

|
Agave Americana Blue / Varigata
Ideal for a conservatory, but very hardy to cold if given adequate drainage. It's not the frost but the damp which will kill it.
Plant in very well drained soil in full sun. Essential for the desert / med garden.
